About Cinema Club

History and Particulars

Cinema Club started at Camera Cinemas in 1996, utilizing venues in San Jose, Campbell and Los Gatos. The Club was founded by Ken Karn and taken over a few years later by Tim Sika, who served as the executive director and programmer until 2017. Several members have remained active since the inaugural season and fondly recall seeing SLING BLADE as an advance Cinema Club screening. Perhaps even more memorable during those early days of Club was Jessica Yu passing around her Oscar for several hundred people to fondle.

The Club is best described as a year-round film festival unfolding in slow motion, given that screenings occur once a month on Sundays, the films are always shown in advance of their release, and filmmakers frequently participate in Q&As, whether in person or via webcam on the big screen.

Cinema Club operates like a secret society, but membership is open to all. Club dues offset ongoing operational costs, such as the smorgasbord of food and coffee that greet members when they arrive, and travel expenses for filmmakers and talent.

In order to accommodate hundreds of eager, loyal members, the Club offers a morning screening and an afternoon screening for each monthly meeting.

The movies selected for Club meetings are never announced in advance, so every experience is a surprise.

The Cinema Club screening series is programmed and emceed by Alejandro Adams and Sara Vizcarrondo.

Sara earned degrees in film from Sarah Lawrence and UCLA, and has spent a decade teaching film studies at various Bay Area institutions. She has previously held such distinguished positions as assignments editor at BoxOffice Magazine and release calendar editor at Rotten Tomatoes.

Alejandro's hard-scrabble approach to independent filmmaking earned him accolades in publications such as Variety and Village Voice. He teaches film production and modern film history at San Jose State University, and developed a course titled The Business of Film for UK-based Hult Business School.

Together Sara and Alejandro are famous for their warmth and enthusiasm. Separately they are famous for their insomnia and love of tiny dogs.

Both Sara and Alejandro can be reached via firstnamelastname@gmail.com.
